Hood Tier Stewardship
Dufur, OR
Mount Hood National Forest
Partnering with 44 Trails we’re working on rehabilitating the lower section of the Fifteenmile Trail #456. This is a unique section of trail descending from the 44 Trails network into the scrub oak savanna hill country of Dufur. It’s a key connection in our Hood Tier gorge loop.
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - That's right, we just need a smile, a pair of gloves, and a can-do attitude from you. Our goals for this event will be focused primarily on re-establishing trail tread and clearing undergrowth and deadfall along the trail corridor.
SCHEDULE - We plan on putting in a full day from 8:30am to 4pm.
GETTING THERE - We will stage and park at the bottom of Fifteenmile canyon on NF4421. Driving directions from Portland are here, which takes about 2.5 hours. The last mile is a narrow, steep road where most vehicles besides a Prius will be fine if you’re a careful driver, but a high clearance vehicle is recommended. Note: Google may suggest coming from the east or north. Do not do this. The approach from NF2730 is the recommended route.
LOGISTICS - It’s September in a shady canyon—the weather could be hot or chilly. Look at the forecast and come prepared. Drink plenty of water, take breaks, and wear sunscreen. There is no cell service.
MEALS - Please bring your own lunch and snacks. We’ll provide coffee in the morning and drinks after.
YOU SHOULD BRING - During the work day Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required to work on public lands; this includes a 6-point suspension helmet (some loaners provided), eye protection, gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirt, and sturdy shoes/boots. Bring a daypack with water, snacks, mosquito repellant, and sunscreen.
This is going to be a fun event breathing life into an old trail in one of Mt Hood’s best backcountry zones. We're excited and grateful that you're spending a valuable summer weekend day giving back to our public lands. On behalf of the Oregon Timber Trail Alliance and 44 Trails a huge thanks goes out to everyone lending a hand at this stewardship event.
If you can join us, please RSVP to matt.ruddy@oregontimbertrail.org so we can get a head count
