The 44 Trails Area on the east side of Mt. Hood is home to some of Oregon’s most iconic singletrack - and includes key sections of the original Oregon Timber Trail, specifically Gunsight Butte and Surveyors Ridge. These classic ridge line trails offer panoramic views, fast-flowing forested segments, and the kind of backcountry riding experience that helped shape the OTT from the beginning.
Today, the forest roads running parallel to these singletrack routes form a foundational portion of the new Oregon Timber Trail Adventure Route, giving long-distance riders flexible options for terrain, access, and multi-day travel. Together, these trails and roads make the 44 Trails Area a vital part of both the OTT and the greater mountain biking community—but they require annual maintenance to stay clear, safe, and rideable.
This year, OTTA is partnering with 44 Trails to host a region-wide stewardship event in honor of National Trails Day. Trail work will focus on a specific segment identified collaboratively based on spring conditions, storm impacts, and priority needs—whether brushing, clearing downfall, refreshing tread, or addressing drainage on key connectors.
What's National Trails Day All About? On the first Saturday in June, National Trails Day is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. Tens of thousands of hikers, bikers, paddlers, horseback riders, trail clubs, federal and local agencies, land trusts, and businesses come together in partnership to advocate for, maintain, and clean up public lands and trails. SCHEDULE – Sunday, June 7
9:00–9:30 – Meet and plan for the day
9:30–3:00 – Trail Work on designated 44 Trails/OTT segment
3:00–4:00 – Collect, discuss the day, return tools and celebrate a successful event
4:00 – Optional group ride (routes depend on trail conditions)
Bring your bike—once the work is done, we’ll enjoy the trails we restored together.
LOCATION: The 44 Trails Area is roughly:
1.5 hours from Portland
1 hour from Hood River
2.5 hours from Bend
